Working in a dream job!

November 23rd, 2009 § Leave a Comment

I am so fortunate, I get to work with my passion – making a difference in the environment. My parents Helen and Hugo own a company named Farming Secrets, they teach farmers to how to farm sustainably. I get to design the graphics and upload clips onto utube about experts from all over the globe and expert farmers, who are so passionate about giving their message to the people growing our food.

Mum and dad, along with thier fellow colleagues are so committed and such a support for any farmer out there. I feel so lucky to be able to be a part of this experience and see the difference they are making.

We are also working on a media launch there to get the message of biological and organic farming out there. It is just so easy, you dont need the nasty chemicals tha depleat the soil, only products that nature makes. It is really rewarding to see the difference it is making.
You can see by all the short clips at www.farmingsecretsblog.com

I just feel so blessed to be working with two gorgeous people, who happen to be my parents and people that I really admire.

Watching the film 2012

November 16th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

Last night my fiance and I went to see the movie 2012. It really made me think, about the world, the government and humanity. But what really made me think, was about my sustainable fashion range I am launching in the next 2 months, it made me realise that I have to be really conscious that I am working with and for the environment, rather than compromise the sustainable part for the look of the range. I can see how it could become quite easy to worry about the image of the brand more than what the purpose is. It does worry me that we are trashing our world and are not banding together to make the difference we could.
So, i’m committed to making the range as great as I can.

Bamboo Fabric – How good is it?

October 30th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

I have realised that the bamboo fabric I was using for my range was shrinking even after I had it professionally pre-shrunk (I have now found it is an extremely delicate and unpredictable fabric).

Anyway, I had some sample garments made and did a wash test and they just kept on shrinking! It was not funny at the time, but perhaps a great blessing as I did some further research and found that although the fibre is fast growing, the method that this particular fabric uses was made in the same way that viscose is. Where they break down the pulp with huge a amount of nasty chemicals to obtain the finished product.

So at this point, bamboo fabric is not a part of the range that I will be selling.

Why does it matter to have a sustainable fashion industry?

February 20th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

Why does it matter? Because if clothing is made from man made fibres such as polyester for example, is plastic and polyester does not break down or biodegrade. We now have a new system for plastic bags in supermarkets, why are we not using natural fabrics and fibres in the fashion industry?
Sustainable fabrics are a far better starting place for the fashion industry to start being responsible. For example bamboo is a ‘new’ fibre that has come into the industry in the last couple of years, it can grow up to a metre a day, it has antibacterial properties, it is easy to grow. It is a fantastic fibre to touch and wear also!! So have a think about what you are putting on your body the next time you buy a new outfit!!!
